March 18th, 2026 Luxury Group: A conversation with Christy Donato, Global Luxury Strategy lead for Marriott International’s Luxury Group

This semester, the Georgetown Retail & Luxury Association welcomed Christy Donato, Global Luxury Strategy Lead of Marriott International Luxury Group, for a conversation on curating a memorable luxury hospitality experience.

Donato reflected on the recent changes in the luxury hospitality industry, especially marking the shift pre- and post-COVID. Donato especially emphasized how customer expectations around luxury are evolving, with growing demand for experiential hospitality and more tailored, personalized experiences. She noted that one way Marriott crafts these experiences is through partnerships with brands that transcend typical collaborations and become part of the hotel’s brand world, such as Marriott’s Bonvoy Boutique.

Throughout the conversation, Donato spoke to the importance of distinguishing the different brands within the Marriott portfolio and what goes into crafting a successful brand identity that resonates with a target demographic. She also highlighted the need to continuously track how each brand’s target customer evolves over time in order to better meet their needs and reinforce long-term loyalty.

When asked about advice she would give to students looking to break into the luxury hospitality industry, Donato encouraged an open mind with initial positions and opportunities. Reflecting on her background in consumer packaged goods, Donato explained that gaining experience in a different industry is common, as many do not initially start in the luxury hospitality space. Furthermore, she emphasized how being open in your career trajectory allows for unexpected learning opportunities. Referencing her time at a local real estate entity, Donato said that she did not “know if I could have stepped into [current] role without those building blocks.” Specifically, she encouraged students to look into global rotational programs, as they allow you to engage with a variety of customers and learn how to meet diverse needs.
